I have another Dell Inspiron i660s Desktop (the bigger one for gamers) that I have absolutely loved since I bought it a year ago. I bought this one for a close friend because his computer was years old and the slow speed hindered me from doing anything, it drove me crazy! It’s going to be a Christmas gift but I set the computer up already and I didn’t have any issues! Everything started up perfectly, no weird messages about the fan, no issues updating the computer (it was set to do it automatically), and everything I could possibly need came in the package safe and secure. I tested everything out first because my friend is what I call technologically-handicapped. He can handle basic web searching and that’s pretty much it. But that’s why this computer is so perfect, there’s nothing difficult about it! He could have handled the set up on his own, I only did it so he wouldn’t have to spend time letting the computer install all the updates. It’s simple, durable, and quiet! And small! The desktop is really small, which is a huge plus because you don’t need a huge tower if you’re only doing the basics and with the setup he has now, it’s a pain in the butt having to try and get to the back of the huge tower he has because it would only fit on the ground in a closed off corner. This thing is powerful enough to do some light gaming but small enough that he could keep it anywhere nearby, even in the oversized drawer of his desk. I loved the accessibility of all of the usb plug-ins. For a basic user, it’s all he’ll need. He can plug in his keyboard and mouse, his flash drives, his speakers, and there’s still a few left over if anything else needs a usb plug-in, like his iPhone. I was very happy that his came with Windows 7 because, while I use Windows 8 and I’ve been able to get it to work for me, I don’t particularly like Windows 8 and I know that he wouldn’t. I was also VERY happy to have the computer NOT come with all the pre-loaded crap. I spent three hours getting all the pre-loaded stuff off of his other computer because it was slowing it down. Without all that junk, it was easy to customize the pc to only what he would need: Antivirus of my choosing (not some trial), Microsoft Office (once again, not a trial version that I’d have to get rid of later because he has a newer copy), and a few other necessities for any one who uses a computer but really doesn’t know what they are doing.

As far as the functionality of the machine: speed is great, it’s very quiet, doesn’t get hot even after leaving on for hours, everything on the desktop is easy to find and access, it’s light but it felt durable, it doesn’t feel cheap at all, it had all of the ports he would need (HE FINALLY HAS A PC WITH HDMI, I had to set his current computer up with an hdmi cord and a DVI-HDMI converter and an audio plug so he could watch his internet shows on his TV. Huge pain in the butt that I can now do away with since this computer has that port!), easy to use, I didn’t have any issue finding anything on the computer that he may need to find, easy to customize, just an all around easy computer to use. I’ve had my own Dell for two years now with no trouble at all, it’s been fantastic, and that’s the whole reason I went ahead and bought him one from the same computer series because it’s been proven to be reliable, both in reviews and for me. And I’m a computer programmer and gamer, so I tend to push my computers to their limit.

Received the Dell Inspiron 660s and as soon as I turned it on, I was presented with a CPU Fan Failure message. I immediately started the complaint process with Amazon only to find out they could not send me another unit since they were sold out and offered to return the PC and refund my money. This is kind of silly since a fan only cost a few bucks and is easy to install. So I opted to not return the product.

It was after that decision that I discovered what the problem was and how to fix it. It turns out the fan is free-floating impellor, which can be pulled out of the fan housing and replaced. When I did so, I noticed the sleeve that it set in was raised. So, I put the impellor into is seat and pushed it down until I heard a click. That click was the sleeve and impellor seating correctly. Guess what? My fan now works.

I’m guess that the impellor portion dislodges during shipment since it is not a fixed fan. I sure hopes this helps others who purchase this unit, or one similar to it. I also hope that Dell creates a new way to ship this unit to prevent such a problem.

CPU fan didn’t work.

I bought this particular model on Black Friday (from Amazon) for a really decent price. It had Windows 7 which was a big plus for me.I had to wait about two weeks for it to be delivered because it was back ordered. I wasn’t informed about the delay. Amazon customer support gave me free 1 day shipping for my trouble which was great.

When I powered up the computer I got an error message that the CPU fan wasn’t working from the Bios. I checked and I could see that the CPU fan wasn’t spinning. I was able to boot into Windows and everything seemed to work. But without a CPU fan I couldn’t run the risk of overheating the computer. So I’m returning the computer. This was my first Dell computer.

A little sadden to see that the computer was built in Mexico and not the U.S.
