I researched laptops for a month before I bought my ASUS G75VW-DS72.I'm a video shooter/editor and I was tired of the lags and skips on hi-def AVI files.I ordered the ASUS from Amazon and hoped for the best. I received it it the mail five days before I expected it.
WOW did I do some awesome research. This laptop is SCREAMING FAST. My previous laptop was pretty fast, it rendered a 10 minute DV-AVI in about 20 minutes. My new ASUS renders the same 10 minute video in less than 2 minutes!POW!
I won't miss the bluescreen of death once a month that I'd come to expect with my previous model (VAIO).No disrespect, my VAIO was a real pal, a trooper that got me through MANY edits, but its newest reviews didn't impress me.
I am so happy with my new ASUS that I render movies I don't even need...just to watch the progress bar fly to the right. This laptop was clearly designed for gamers, but it's perfect for my video productions.
I have found all pros and no cons with my new ASUS.There is much joy in my heart each time I lift the lid.
I received this laptop yesterday and was drooling to get it out of the box and fired up.I was immediately impressed with the looks and feel of this machine.I got the battery loaded, plugged it in and turned it on.I then went through all the new startup menus and got to my desktop, so far so good as I was loving everything about it.Then, once I started playing with all the cool programs preloaded by ASUS, the trouble started.I kept getting a screen blanking and message saying that my video driver recovered from a failure or something along those lines. So, I thought, I probably need to update the drivers and all that normal new computer stuff.Once I got to NVIDIA's web site, I come to learn that the graphics card in this machine doesn't have any drivers out for it yet!!!HUH?Yep, NVIDIA put out the GTX 670M graphics card with no extablished drivers for it.After reading the forums, there is still no date given for when the drivers will be available. They have the drivers for the Linux OS but not for Win 7/XP. So, those of you that are wanting a "turnkey" system right out of the box will be dissapointed as I was to discover that you will have to wait an undetermined amount of time for drivers to support the card in this laptop. As it sits now, can't even play the current games on the lowest video settings without screen blanking and even blue-screen/system restarts.I'm sure that once the drivers are out, this system will be a gamer's dream but till then.......I'm keeping my finger's crossed.
UPDATE:Today is 6/28/2012 and I just got my laptop back from ASUS after sending it to them on the 19th.IT IS A FREAKING BEAST !!!!.They replaced the GPU in the system as the original one was obviously bad.Now it is running great with none of the issues I was having before with the screen blanking and driver recovery popup notices.I have only run the Windows Experience Index so far as I haven't downloaded a benchmark tool yet but it gave me 7.4's on both of the graphics tests where before it was only giving me 1.0's.I'm currently installing SWTOR on here and am excited to see how the game plays on maxed settings. So far everything about this system now seems to be exactly as I had hoped it would be when I ordered it.I now can only hope that the ssue I had with the GPU was a limited fluke in just a few of those cards and the rest of the machines out there are just fine.I'll post a new update once I've run some different games with maxed setting and let you games know how it performs....but so far it looks like it will be just as all the other reviews are that you can find on YouTube for this system.
I read a great deal on this laptop and most reviews were negative with freeze-ups, bluescreens of death and no drivers for the vidio card....Awsome machine, well constructed, chicklet back lit keyboard, sounds good (not great) more memeory on the vidiocard than most laptops have period. I have played games with no slow down or freezing. I have streamed movies not only on the laptop but through the laptop to the TV. No connection problems with my wireless Netgear router nor my bluray player. Wish the battery lasted a bit longer but in game mode with back lighting on dosen't last more than 2 hours. (buy a 2nd btry). Overall if you are not into the laptop for gaming you need much less than this for alot less bucks but if you want THE machine and do not want to spend the bucks on aleinware, or MSI then you may want to consider the ASUS. This is my 7 month update, Still impressed with this monster. The fans remain quiet even after all this time. Glad I ignored the initial reviews I would buy this again with no hesitatation what-so-ever!
I bought one of these in Oct 2012.It can me in two days instead of the 4 they said it would take (nice) and was left sitting on my doorstep in plain view, with a shipping label attached that actually listed the entire package contents!I'm amazed that it was still there when I got home! What would have happened if it was just gone and I never got it?No signature to receive a $2K item?Ok.
Out of the box it worked well.In fact, for exactly one year, it worked well. The only issue with it was that the "subwoofer" is notoriously difficult to use.The sound is greatly enhanced with it active, but it is not controlled by the main system volume control. If you plug in headphones, the subwoofer still plays sound, so you have to go into your sound device settings and manually turn it down.Super annoying when you want to rip out the headphones to show something to someone. You have to go reset the subwoofer volume EVERY TIME.
In Sept 2013 the real fun began. The laptop now just freezes up randomly. It doesn't matter what it is being used for.It isn't reliable.Safe mode is the only reliable way to use the laptop, which is useless because you can't use sound or video drivers in safe mode. When I was first researching this laptop I didn't find anything about this issue. Now that I am experiencing it, I am seeing forum posts everywhere about this issue with ASUS laptops, though most don't seem to have the extreme problem that I am having.
The laptop will freeze up during the boot process, making recovery impossible.Every attempt to reinstall windows is met with failure.Restore isn't able to finish because the crap machine won't run for more that a couple minutes (which is a long time) without just locking up.The four recovery discs the machine demands you burn don't do anything at all no matter how I try to use them; pre boot, triggered from menu,
When I first got it, I would have recommended it to anyone. Now that I've had the pleasure of using it for a while, I would never buy another ASUS product, nor would I suggest anyone else to even consider it.Search google for "ASUS laptop freezes randomly" and you will see thread after thread of people having these problems with ASUS machines.
TL;DR - Piece of crap machine that is going back to the factory
This purchase through Amazon was a first for me because of all the 'bad knocks' about being stuck with junk purchased on/through the Net,in general. Purchasing through Amazon was a GREAT experience and 'yes' I would do it again.
The product. What can I say,ASUS (in my mind is GREAT)and they certainly didn't let me down with this one. The wieght of it made me adapt an 'apposing corners' handling/lifting the Laptop. When I picked it up by the sides I popped the gard off the DVD player but managed to pop that back in place. The only other thing I have noticed,to date,is the installation of five(5) Control Active X programs, all the same Product Version from MS Corp. BUT none of them in English. MS Corp. should be able to answer this question.
I'm off to visit family and friends in AB & SK for a week or so and I'm quite sure it will be tested when my Grandson gets his mits on it.
Have a GREAT day and give it your 'all',unless you have to go to the Bank for a loan to do it.
By our suggestions above, we hope that you can found Asus Rog Gaming Laptop 17 I7 for you. Please don't forget to share your experience by comment in this post. Thank you!
