The fatal flaw of this router is the fact that it’s CPU is not powerful enough to support gigabit or even half gig speeds. While it has gig ports on it, when I ran my speed tests from a variety of services, I would get my fully provisioned speed (450 mbps) for a few seconds of the speed test, then it would decline to 190 or so.
and now I’m back at 450 mbps… consistently, with no drop off. The China-based support on the TP-Link was terrible, as an aside, and had no idea what the issue was or how to solve it.
Ok, so after I initially set this up, I was frustrated for a day or so until I figured out what was going on.The router has been up for a couple of days now with now issues and I hope it continues this way.I had to install this in a wall panel, so I needed it to be able to work properly on power cycles without me going to the devices physically.As stated in the title, there are 2 things to be careful about for simple connections, like a home network in my case:
1) Ports 2, 3, and 4 can be configured as LAN (Local network) OR WAN (Internet) ports and I think, by default, ports 1 AND 2 are set for WAN. So if you hook your internet/external network connection up to Port 1 and then just assume you can connect a local computer up to Port 2 to manage configuration, you’re gonna have a bad time.For initial config, connect your internet to Port 1 and computer to Port 5 and then setup WAN/LAN configurable ports the way you need before reconnecting anything else.
2) Several others had issues with dropping the WAN (Internet) connection after less than an hour, it seems like this is because of the "Anti ARP Spoofing" firewall feature, which I think is also on by default and seems to be crap.Disable it and you should see WAN stability. I was getting extremely frustrated because my internet connection just seemed to keep dropping.My computer would state that they still had an ethernet connection but no internet.I’d be able to successfully reach and log in to the router and then I’d have to manually force a connection on the WAN (even if it said connected) and test pinging Google to see if it was actually connected.It would be up for 45-60 minutes then die out again.It would self-correct a lot of the time but it was frequent enough and lasted long enough that it impacted regular web surfing and listening to Pandora.I have WebPass (Google Fiber) and haven’t ever had connection drop issues, so I started playing with the configurations.Once I turned that one off, everything was working perfectly.There are additional settings to allow bound MAC addresses (which you can import automatically when you reserve them in DHCP), but I didn’t even want to test that.Just turn the functionality off and everything is good.
Otherwise, so far so good!Loses a star because those are on by default (if I remember correctly, could be wrong) and they caused serious headaches.
I got this to replace a Linksys WRT54GL running DD-WRT. I recently had 50+ MB cable internet installed as part of a T-W/Spectrum package, and the Linksys router couldn’t keep up speed-wise. It would only get about 35 MB throughput, and if I connected a computer directly to the cable modem I would see 61 MB speed (Spectrum was over performing in this case). I was wasting 25 MB of speed by using the Linksys router. After installing this router, I now see the full speed at my computer behind the router. Its setup was not at all complicated, as long as you have a working knowledge of networking. Some reviewers have complained about the setup process, but I did not find it a problem (but then again, I am pretty much a geek). The price is excellent for a router of this quality. My alternative was to convert an old PC into being a router, which would have provided plenty of speed, but that would have been more cumbersome space and power-wise. I can’t comment as to longevity at this point, but so far, so good.
I’ve been looking for a decent wired router for years.Basically we have ethernet cables run because where the cable comes in his a horrible place for wifi, so why not just separate the two?The problem I always run into is that most of them are either so pro focused (Ubiquiti) I can’t figure it out.Or they’re sot expensive, that it would make sense just to buy another mid tier wifi router, and turn the wifi off.This one was a nice balance.Simple enough, with the advanced features I was looking for.
Only real knocks: 1.They do not update the firmware very often… which makes me security nervous. 2. You can’t name (or have names show up for) the reserved IPs.Seriously, how hard is that?It’s not the end of the world, just make a spread sheet.Weirdly, for all of the DHCP clients, it has their names displayed.Maybe they figure it’s redundant?In any case, found that a bit annoying.
Overall though, I’m really impressed.No problems with uptime at all (at 6 months I moved some cords around, and that was the first time it got rebooted in months).Eventually, I’d like to dig into the VPN stuff a bit more… but I guess that’s for a future edit to this.

The firmware for this unit is buggy with many unadvertised limitations.
I have only been at it for a few hours, but it started off ugly right away. I tried changing the DHCP range from 192.168.1.100 through 149 to 200 through 249. As soon as I entered the lower limit, I got an error window about the range being invalid. Every time I hit OK, the error repeated, with no opportunity to change either the upper or lower limit. I had to exit my browser, log in again and then changed the upper limit first. I also updated to the latest firmware.
When I changed to the 10.0.0.1 subnet, I was surprised to find I could still only set the LAN to /24 through /30. No /16 subnet support.
The VLAN support may as well be nonexistent. Each port can be set to VLAN1,2,3 or 4. No tagged/untagged membership controls. No control of the LAN address per VLAN. No control of DHCP per VLAN. Firewall rules only seemed to support LAN vs WAN, with no obvious way to enable or control any traffic between VLANs. [Update 20130808 Since no VLAN tagged frames seem to go in or out of the box, the implementation feels more like they are just providing up to 4 subnets, not 4 VLANs. Of course, you would expect to be able to set different addresses on each port if they called them subnets.]
Control of IPV6 transition tunneling is a single 6to4 enable checkbox with no other parameters to set up my IPV6 tunnel to Hurricane Electric.
Throughput is good enough for my FIOS 50/25 mbps connection, although I've seen other reviews indicate that the unit tops out at a little more than 100 mbps when used as a firewall. Benchmarks quoted in the 700 mbps range were apparently performed using the DMZ port with no firewall or NAT involved.
DHCP clients (static or dynamic) show up by name in forward DNS, but have no reverse DNS entries. Puppet server is not getting names to associate with the numeric IP addresses of clients.
Update after a week: Throughput has been very solid, with no reboots or hang-ups. A small business with no need for VLANs or subnets would probably find this to be a fast and reliable unit.Many advanced features listed in the CISCO spec sheet are simply not usable.
Update at 2 weeks: One more broken feature, SNMP returns a zero value for the sysObjectID, so monitoring tools like OpenNMS can not match the RV042G's detailed replies to any known MIB to extract throughput and other metrics.
Love this thing! Bought two -- installed one at our office and one at the house. Search for "Connecting Remote Offices by Setting Up" for instructions to establish the VPN Tunnels . A little intimidating, but step-by-step and easy-peasy. Make sure config on each side matches exactly. I did gway-to-gway and specifified domain names (not ip addresses) as my office is static ip and the house is dynamic. I created an a-record for my house ip address off the domain name of the business web address so when verizon changes my house ip address I don't have to reconfig the router. Replaced the verizon router at both locations, making this the primary router. At home, the verizon router hangs off one of the ports to provide the TV guide information. I did lose the settings on one of the routers once -- reconfigured to match the other once again -- I need to add a UPS as I assume that was the reason.
I'm a Cisco Small Business fan boy these days after they sent me a replacement for a second hand switch (SF300-24)that had a flash memory issue. No questions asked and at their expense (overnight shipping too!). So I returned to Cisco SB when shopping for a new router.
I purchased the RV042G because it offers gigabit connectivity and two WAN ports coupled with customer service that is miles better than the usual phone tree/call center BS that you get with most consumer grade network gear(including Cisco/Linksys home products). I'm an AT&T U-verse customer and while their service is good, it's not quite quick enough (12mbps) for my family of iPad/netflix/HBOgo addicts. So the ability to put the router in "load balancing" mode and add on a cable modem to give us extra bandwidth was the biggest reason for the upgrade. There is no wireless on this router and for me that's perfect, could be a drawback for some.
Setup was very straight forward. I didn't even use the "set up wizard". Just changed a few settings through the web interface and it was online in a jiffy. It's probably not as easy as the setup on a typical home unit (ie. airport or Cisco Connect), so a little knowledge of protocols and ports is needed. There are not a lot of parental type controls on the unit. You can block specific domains and key words but I haven't seen any MAC or IP based filtering options in the menus yet, but I wouldn't really expect that given the intended audience for this unit. I'm not using the VPN functions right now, so I can't comment on those. There is only one thing I've found that seemed like an odd limitation of this unit. The DHCP server is limited to 50 clients, additional IP's would have to be assigned static. Overall, I'm really happy with the unit.
One last thing. Since this item is not available from Amazon proper, be careful who you buy it from. My first purchase was from Amazon seller "Nu Image". Waited more than a week for the unit and when it arrived, it was destroyed. They shipped it USPS packaged only in a plastic bag. They promised me an expedited replacement but days went by and nothing till Amazon issued a refund. When I asked about my replacement, I was told to just start over and order another one. I reordered from Amazon seller "The Nerds". Router was shipped via Fedex and was at my door (packed in a proper box) in 2 days and was cheaper to boot.
UPDATE 10-12-12:
In my previous review I said that I hadn't found a way to set parental controls or do IP based filtering.I have since discovered how this is done on this router. There is not a parental settings page or anything like that but under the firewall option in the menu, you can set "access rules" till your heart is content. As with the basic set up of the unit, some knowledge of TCP/IP ports and services is required to get this set up. Mine is now configured to disallow traffic to my kid's ipods, Nindendo's and TV's after bed time.
I'm still very happy with this unit. Every function I have set up has worked great, even Xbox Live and in game chat have no NAT issues at all (port forwarding required.
Be careful with Firmware update.One of the earlier firmware versions prior to October 2016 had a bug that prevented logging on due to the security certificate.The solution was to use Google Chrome to update to the latest firmware.Surprisingly, I could log on using my iPad and Safari.But without a way to load the new firmware, it made it more frustrating. But Verizon FIOS really screwed up and pushed out a DNS server IP address that wasn't working.Once I set it up with Open DNS, the problem went away.This unit, once working, stays up for weeks at a time.It works with FIOS.I used the FIOS router's software interface to release the FIOS router, then turned off the FIOS router.I then put this Cisco router in its place and it worked fine.I used the old router to bridge to the coax set top boxes.(Turn off the DHCP server using it as a bridge.Use the Cisco router's DHCP server instead)

I ditched my severely complicated and unwieldy Cisco RV320 for the Peplink Balance One and am extremely happy. The Peplink has a vastly superior and usable interface, both for configuration and monitoring. And the price is exceptional. The primary value on this device is that the load balancing algorithms are much more flexible and powerful than the Cisco.
My only complaint is that the published WAN to LAN throughput is 600Mbps, but I never get more than 400Mbps. That is a pretty large discrepancy. The Cisco could get me 880Mbps WAN to LAN.

Our router was going out. The WAN connection appeared to be dropping at an increasing rate. After studying the logs I found that it happens when the network is under load. After some calls with the ISP who insisted that their modem was up and running. I concluded it was time for a new network router. I installed these at various of my clients and love these Peplink routers for their super easy user interface and rock solid performance. Still I balked at the price for our own home network, researched the usual consumer grade routers by Asus, Linksys. These things look like stealth bombers and have an endles spec sheet with options no one needs. Knowing that these consumer routers on average start to fail after abour 3 years and the time it would take me to do a proper setup I spend the extra $100 and bought what I recommend my clients. A peplink Balance (I bought the core since we already have Ubiquity Unifi WiFi AP's). Glad I did, installation was quick and easy including VPN service so we can use public wifi while traveling and are still protected by our own encrypted tunnel to our home network. Connected a At&T LTE modem via USB and set it up as a back-up ISP. Improvement was instantanious. Browsing the web is much more responsive. I don't care that much about the speed test results (witch are above spec). What really matters is the quick response when clicking links in the internet. Pages now load in a blink of an eye. Sure enough after 24 hours I checked the router log and did not find a single dropped WAN connection from my cable ISP.
I retired an Apple Airport Base Station (no longer being sold) in favor of this router and I have no regrets. It does everything I need it to do and much more, and I look forward to multi-WAN reliability.
I'd give this product five stars, but PepLink needs to be called out for their strange indifference to IPv6. Optionally bridging IPv6 traffic at "layer 2" to one-and-only-one WAN port does not count as IPv6 support. Even a ten year old AirPort Base Station was/is a fully capable IPv6 router.
I've been a Peplink customer for several years, initially starting with a Peplink Balance 20.I wanted a good VPN router, to allow me manage my network from anywhere, while providing good firewall throughput, stability and protection. I am an IT professional with over 30 years of experience and well versed in Cisco and other major router manufacturers. After doing extensive research, I chose the Peplink Balance 20.Sitting behind my Comcast router, the Peplink gave me everything I wanted, and more.The few times I needed tech support, they were very responsive. They listen to their customers, and routinely incorporate user-requested feature enhancements.The Balance 20 served me well for years, but recently my ISP (Comcast) increased my internet speed above the 150mbps limit of the Balance 20.So based my great experience with the Balance 20, I upgraded to the Balance One Core.The Balance One Core gives me the same interface as the Balance 20, the same features and stability, but with faster speeds (600mbps) and more Ethernet ports.I am extremely happy with the Balance One Core.Even with a large number of Firewall rules, I am getting full speed, with no degradation in performance.The VPN features are amazing and allow me to connect from anywhere. AND let us not forget the great Dual-WAN features!Having had 2 ISPs (Cable and a DSL backup), over the years my Peplink has flawlessly provided failover between WAN connections, whenever there was an outage, and we never noticed anything had changed.This is a quality product from a quality company that really cares about its customers.For security, performance, reliability and great feature sets, you can't do any better than Peplink.
Trying to replace my older Netgear FVS318G wired router, which could not allow down speeds greater than 60 Mbps, to take advantage of my Comcast account, which is delivering 180 Mbps down, and 25 Mbps up. Tried a lower cost consumer Linksys LRT214 and a more expensive Cisco RV325. Dumbfounded to discover they could not pass through multiple instances of different ports to different servers behind firewall on my VLAN. This PepLink Balance has an EXCELLENT user interface, and I was able in three hours to set it up, configure it with my external public IP addresses, setup firewall access rules for two different HTTP and HTTPS servers inbound from WAN to LAN, set up the multiple ports required for access to my email server, all using one of the best graphical interfaces I have encountered. NOTE: I have not set up VPN, so cannot comment on that, as I do not need it. Also, I inquired at PepLink presales link, and got a response before I bought. Never got a reply from couple of other vendors I tried presales. FWIW, the PepLink manual online is excellent, but I almost did not need it, the graphical interface is so good. Now I am getting download throughput according to ookla speed test of 180 Mbps down, and 25 MBps up, nice to get what I am paying for. Pity that Netgear has seemingly almost abandoned wireless routers at this level of price point, but the one I found had such horrible reviews, I decided it was time to switch.

Very useful device, Settings interface is so simple in use, quick installation and lot of tools to manage - monitor your internet connections. Dashboard also is the best part of this device.
Load balancing... einwandfrei und problemlos. Einrichtung... einfach. Konfigurationsmöglichkeiten: ausreichend. Was fehlt: Steckdosen um Geräte nach Bedarf physisch ein-/auszuschalten (oder ein Zusatzmodul). Für's Strom sparen.
Ansonsten: Top, ich setze es so ein, dass bei zu großer Last am Primäranschluss der 2. dazugenommen wird. Funkt 1A

I bought this Balance One to replace my Cisco RV320 router. It works like a champ. The customer support from Peplink is also fantastic. They really care about their clients. I am glad I moved from Cisco over to Peplink.
